With so much going on this summer, you can’t possibly attend all the concerts and festivals that are happening. We’ve tried to get to as many as possible. We’ve made some new friends, re-connected with listeners we haven’t seen in awhile, and handed out a lot of guitar picks, pens and buttons. Whenever you see the WUWM table at an event, please come over and say ‘Hi’.
Woodstock: 40 Years Special on World Café
Friday, August 14th from 9pm to 11pm It is 40 years ago this August that Woodstock took place, where half a million people gathered in upstate New York for three days of fun and music... and created an iconic American event.
Remember this watershed '60s experience with exclusive interviews with rockers like Grace Slick, Mickey Hart and Richie Havens combined with brand-new, never-before-heard audio recorded during the three days of the festival. Get behind-the-scenes stories from Eddie Kramer (who engineered the original gathering) and Woodstock's promoter, Michael Lang. Also, listen to rock and roll reminiscences from Bob Weir, Leslie West, Arlo Guthrie and more. Enjoy!
Local Woodstock Stories WUWM's Bob Bach talks with Bob Reitman about the Woodstock era and how music was a key form of expression for many young people during the turbulent 1960s. Listen now. Reitman will also relive Woodstock during It's Alright, Ma tonight (7-9pm) and Saturday night (9-11pm).
And, tomorrow during Morning Edition, Bob Bach interviews Milwaukeean Mark Goff, who was a photographer at Woodstock.
UPCOMING CONCERTS Out of all the upcoming concerts, these few really stand out:
· Tracy Chapman - August 14th - Pabst Her American tour is a short one, and we are lucky that Milwaukee is one of her stops. Tracy's latest album is Our Bright Future and her songs are as powerful as they were 20 years ago when Fast Car was a #1 hit. · Lucinda Williams - Sept. 22nd - Pabst The Pabst Theater is one of Lucinda's favorite places to play, and this is her annual visit. She always puts on a good show. · Son Volt - Sept. 26th - Pabst
Their new album is American Central Dust. Son Volt leader Jay Farrar might get less attention than Wilco's Jeff Tweedy, they were bandmates in Uncle Tupelo, but Farrar's songs have that alt-country sound that is irresistible. The music comes across as quite powerful when Son Volt plays live.
NEW MUSIC Here's some new music worthy of your ear-time:
· One EskimO One EskimO is an indie band from London that has been touring with Tori Amos this summer, including a stop in Milwaukee. Their album won't be released in American until Sept. 22nd, but the songs are gorgeous indie-pop. Worth checking out.
· Monsters of Folk You are going to hear an awful lot about Monsters of Folk, so we won't say too much. Let's just say that this combination of M. Ward, Conor Oberst, Jim James and Mike Mogis is about as close to a AAA music super-group as you can get.
· Zee Avi Zee Avi's story is an excellent example of how the music business has changed. The Malaysian singer/songwriter recorded herself playing one of her songs, and posted it on YouTube so her friends could see it. Fast forward to thousands and thousands of plays later, and she signed a record deal with Jack Johnson's Brushfire Records and is touring the U.S. with Pete Yorn. It's an amazing success story. She sounds like a Malaysian version of Ingrid Michaelson. Catchy, bouncy songs that get stuck in your head.
