PUBLIC RADIO
What is public radio?

Public radio comes under the umbrella of noncommercial, non-profit broadcasting. To comply with the rules of the Federal Communications Commission, a non-commercial station must be owned by a non-profit corporation and cannot air the same type of advertising broadcast on commercial radio stations. The objective of non-commercial radio is to serve the needs and the interests of the communities in which it operates.

Who listens to public radio?
The public radio audience consists of roughly six percent more men than women; approximately 66% fall in the 25-54 age group; roughly 59% are college educated; the vast majority are employed and also involved in their communities. Learn more about WUWM’s audience.

How many public radio stations are there?
Out of an approximate total of 2,900 non-commercial stations, there are 700 Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB)-funded and 1,000 non-CPB-funded public radio stations in the U.S.

Are you affiliated with WHAD/Wisconsin Public Radio?
No, WUWM is independent and a separate station from WHAD/Wisconsin Public Radio. We do not share financial resources with them. WPR has two networks - the Ideas Network and the NPR News & Classical Music Network. WUWM is licensed to the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee, while WPR is licensed to UW-Extension.

Just give Membership a call at 414.270.1225 and we’ll take down your new information. Please do not email your credit card or banking account information to us.

If I donate to your station, does my donation also go to Milwaukee Public Television?
No, Milwaukee Public Television is a viewer supported service of Milwaukee Area Technical College.

How are public radio stations funded?
Public radio organizations receive funding from a combination of public sources: individual donations from listeners, local businesses and corporations (underwriting), state/federal grants through the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB). The majority of funding comes from listener contributions and corporate support. Less than 10% of the funding of public radio’s leading stations comes from government grants.

Isn’t public radio supported by taxpayers?
Public radio is primarily supported by individual listeners. Tax payer dollars make up a small percentage of our support – and it decreases every year.

Where does WUWM get its funding?

WUWM is funded by private listener donations, contributions from local businesses, professions, and foundations, as well as the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee. Non-federal financial support represents more than 85% of WUWM's total revenue. This is vital, as public radio stations can no longer rely on government sources alone for the funds it takes to produce quality programming. For more funding information, review our latest Annual Report on our Financial Reports page.

PROGRAMS
I heard a song on WUWM at Nite, Saturday at the Café, It’s Alright, Ma, It’s Only Music, and/or WUWM2: Music 24/7, where can I find a playlist?

Playlists for each program are on each program’s individual page.

Who creates programming content for public radio?
Many stations produce their own local programs, and/or carry programming produced and distributed by other organizations such as National Public Radio (NPR), Public Radio International (PRI), and American Public Media (APM).

What is National Public Radio?
National Public Radio (NPR) was incorporated in 1970 pursuant to the Public Broadcasting Act of 1967, but it is not a government agency. It is a privately supported, not-for-profit membership organization that produces and distributes non-commercial news, talk, and entertainment programming. NPR delivers to a growing audience, currently at 26 million Americans listening each week. The programming from NPR is broadcast to local audiences in partnership with 850 independently operated, non-commercial public radio stations. NPR is not a radio station itself; it does not own any radio stations, nor are NPR member stations required to broadcast all of its programs.

Does WUWM only carry NPR programs?

WUWM carries NPR programs, as well as, programs produced by other networks – see our Affiliations page. And, we produce our own programming, too.

SEARCHING
I heard something on Lake Effect, UWM Today or WUWM News, how to I search for something I heard on WUWM?

Click on the program name to search that program's archive: Lake Effect, UWM Today and WUWM News

This is a keyword search engine. Use a single word for the best results. If you are not sure how to spell a word, type in as much as know. For example, "Milw" will yield results that contain the word Milwaukee. "waukee" will yield results for both Milwaukee and Pewaukee. If you are searching for a particular date, use the format YYYY-MM-DD.

I tried searching for an article, but can’t find it. Help?
The search engine only accepts keywords. Be brief and concise.

AUDIO
I can't listen to your streaming audio but it works on other sites. Why?

You may be experiencing problems with a firewall. Since internet broadcasting is not regulated by an agency like the FCC, there are no technical standards for online streaming. The different methods used may work for you on some sites but not others. Please see our Audio Help page for more information.

Why does WUWM stream in MP3 as opposed to other formats like Windows Media, or Real Audio?
MP3 is a more universally recognized format than the other streaming alternatives. The MP3 format should play on almost any streaming player, giving you the option to choose your favorite player, while allowing WUWM to save time and money by maintaining only a single streaming server.

What is the difference between downloading a program and podcasting?
Podcasting is a method of automatically downloading new programs as they are published. For more information and to learn how to podcast, visit our Podcasting FAQ page.

I get an error message when I click on one of your Podcast Image links. How do I fix this?
The podcast feeds on our site are designed  to be  one-click subscriptions (no fee) for iTunes. You will need to download the iTunes software in order for these links to work correctly. You can download a copy for free at http://www.itunes.com/

I prefer to use podcast software other than iTunes. How can I make your links work in my software?
You can copy the link location by right-clicking the Podcast Image icon. Paste the URL into the appropriate location of your podcast software. Change the itpc:// at the beginning of the URL to http:// and the subscription should work normally.

Visit the RSS/Feed Podcast page for more.
