Lawmakers Look to Shift Power Structure

Some Wisconsin lawmakers favor changing the power structure for some state entities

The Legislature’s budget committee is supposed to decide Tuesday whether to give Gov. Walker the power to sell state- owned property. He included the change in his budget. The proposal seems to be the latest to challenge Wisconsin’s long-standing power structure. Among others: a plan to prohibit circuit court judges from halting new state laws and to intervene in local politics.

Poverty Appears to Have Grown Among Wisconsin Public School Students

43% of Wisconsin public school students poor enough to qualify for lunch assistance

For the ninth year in a row, Wisconsin has counted an increase in the number of public school students eligible for free and reduced-price lunches.

According to the Dept of Public Instruction, 43.2% of students qualify, up from 42.5% a year ago. In raw numbers the total is now 359,000 Wisconsin public school students.

Approximately one-third come from households earning less than $30,000 a year.
