Stories about kids, guns and how to stop the violence. Precious Lives, created by 371 Productions, is a 2-year, 100-part weekly radio series about gun violence and young people in the Milwaukee area. The series applies a public health lens to each story to help listeners understand the full scope of the problem: who are the victims and the shooters; how are the weapons obtained; and what can we change about the environment that contributes to violence in Milwaukee?

Internet radio show host Homer Blow is part of the Precious Lives radio team. He helps shape the stories about youth and gun violence with his decades of experience living and making radio in Milwaukee.

Blow talks about the violence in Milwaukee all of the time on his show, but the story hit close to home recently.

Archie Brown Jr. accidentally hit a two year old with his van when the toddler darted out into the street. The family of the little boy had gathered together for a birthday party. Brown stopped and tried to help the toddler. The toddler’s uncle then grabbed a gun from the house, came out, and killed Brown. Then he fired at Brown’s fleeing passenger, but struck his 15-year-old nephew instead. The day started with a birthday party, and ended with three dead: a toddler, his brother, and Blow’s friend, Brown.

Archie Brown Jr. and Homer Blow had been close friends for 20 years.

There will be a poetry and spoken word event sponsored by Poetry Unplugged on May 12th at Kiss Ultra Lounge to benefit Brown’s four daughters. You can find more information at PreciousLivesProject.com.
