'Against the Grain' Dances Through The Life Of Wisconsin Artist Levi Fisher Ames

Danceworks Performance Company

The new production Against the Grain: The Life and Times of Levi Fisher Ames tells a lesser-known Wisconsin story about a Civil War veteran who found a creative way of dealing with post-war trauma.

"It's a story about a person who heals himself through creativity. It's a story about a person who's able to transform himself several times over and the power and beauty of that. And it's a story about mortality and the mystery of saying goodbye to one's creations, to one's family, and letting go," explains co-writer and director Edward Morgan.

Against the Grain is a coproduction of Danceworks Performance Company and Theatre MXT and was choreographed by Dani Keupper. Both Keupper and Morgan joined Lake Effect's Bonnie North in the studio to discuss the collaboration:

Against the Grain opened last week at the Danceworks Studio Theater on North Water Street and runs Thursday through Sunday at Danceworks and Nov. 9-10 at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center in Sheboygan.

Bonnie joined WUWM in March 2006 as the Arts Producer of the locally produced weekday magazine program Lake Effect.
