Ex Fabula: Don't Try This at Home

Art Montes
Storyteller Bill Stevens

Who doesn’t love a good adventure? Or maybe you’re more of an adrenaline junkie. The Ex Fabula archives are full of colorful tales of youth gone wild, testing the limits, and moments of “what was I thinking?” As we get older, some of us continue searching for new ways to push our limits...say, by mountain climbing, skydiving, or traveling to far off lands.

Others, like our Storytellers today, chose to create their own adventures, right here at home. And while they both came out mostly unscathed, we’re adding the disclaimer; please don’t try this at home.

Bill Stevens is an avid bike rider, and will even do tricks if you ask him to. During our February 2016 “Fatherhood” StorySlam Bill told us about one such time his confidence may have overtaken his abilities. A boy and a football, Bill on his bike, and a convoluted version of “Look Mom, no hands!” Don’t worry - nothing was damaged during the incident, except maybe Bill’s pride.

Storyteller Christian Matson-Alvariz.

Christian Matson-Alvariz enjoys walks around our city. Long walks. Walks that take him into unusual tunnels, under train tracks and overpasses and through areas most urbanites never visit. Soon, like the Pied Piper, or Forrest Gump, he gained a following of others who enjoyed discovering hidden city gems. Thus, Brew City Safari was born. During our “OOPS” StorySlam in 2015 Christian took to our stage to share the story of one Urban Hike, upon which he and his troop got more than they bargained for.
