Ex Fabula: Why Storytelling Workshops?

Art Montes
Storyteller Barbara Leigh

One of the programs Ex Fabula is most proud of is our Storytelling Workshops, and our next is on November 12th at Turner Hall. During an Ex Fabula Storytelling Workshop, trained Storytelling Coaches assist participants in finding their story, understanding the power and importance of storytelling, how to structure a story for maximum impact, and give tips for practice before taking the stage.

This week we’re sharing two very different and exemplary stories from two women who have participated in Ex Fabula Storytelling Workshops.

Storyteller Jackie Rice

Our first story comes from Jacqueline (Jackie) Rice, who was one of our curated Storytellers for our special 2016 Doors Open Milwaukee StorySlam at the Wisconsin Black Historical Society. Jackie began by explaining that long before the terrorist attacks, September 11th had been a difficult day - as it was the anniversary of her mother’s death. However, on that day in 2001, BROTHER, her favorite band, was playing a show at Rainbow Summer and Jackie was looking forward to the distraction - until she turned on the news. Listen in to Jackie’s poignant story of how one band and one neighborhood came together in grief and solidarity.

Our second story comes from Barbara Leigh, our November “Hidden” StorySlam Audience Favorite. As a girl, Barbara read every Nancy Drew mystery and had big plans to be a P.I. some day. When she grew up, she found herself studying theater in London instead. However, when she found herself on the outside of a film institute with all of her belongings, including her wallet and passport, locked on the inside, her P.I. skills kicked in. Tune in to hear how Barbara saved her own day:
