Free Bus Rides in Milwaukee County on Monday

Michelle Maternowski
If the strike indeed is off on Monday, people will ride the buses for free

The free bus service on July 6 is meant to thank regular riders for their adaptability during the three-day strike, according to County Executive Chris Abele.

Union drivers walked off the job early Wednesday, after they and the Milwaukee County Transit System failed to reach a new contract agreement. The union says its drivers plan to return to the job early Saturday morning, even though they don't yet have a new contract.

The strike has left tens of thousands of residents without their regular form of transportation to get to jobs and stores and appointments. The walkout has also left thousands of Summerfest-goers and people traveling to the lakefront for the July 3 fireworks, without the special bus service that eliminates the need to drive and park downtown.

“This day of free transit won’t make up for the massive inconvenience riders felt last week when union leaders went out on strike, however it’s the least we can do to thank the community for their patience,” Abele said.
