Milwaukee Folk-Indie Band Dead Horses is On The Rise

April was a big month for the Wisconsin band Dead Horses.  The group won three WAMI - Wisconsin Area Music Industry - awards, including 2016’s Album of the Year for “Cartoon Moon,” Best Bluegrass/Americana band, and lead singer Sarah Vos was named Best Female Vocalist.

Dead Horses joined us in the Lake Effect performance studio back in November when "Cartoon Moon" was first released:

Like all music groups, the Milwaukee-based band Dead Horses has evolved over time. In fact, they weren’t always a Milwaukee-based band – they started in Oshkosh in 2010. Since then, they, and their following, have gotten a lot bigger. The band has now shared the stage with acts like Trampled By Turtles and Elephant Revival.

And now their latest, long-anticipated album is officially out – Cartoon Moon. Vocalist and songwriter Sarah Vos says she has no qualms about writing intensely personal songs.

"It's interesting how different people feel comfortable expressing themselves in different ways," she explains. "And music, and songwriting for me, for whatever reason, I'm A-OK with that. Not even just OK, but it's almost like it's something I have to do."

Vos, along with Dead Horses bandmates Daniel Wolff and Pete Raboin, are on tour now. They'll return to Milwaukee in December for a pair of shows at Colectivo’s Back Room. In the meantime, you can listen to the songs they played for us in the studio by clicking on the files below:
