After an MPD officer was shot early Sunday near 17th and Morgan on Milwaukee's south side, the agency ordered all squad cars to carry two officers instead of one, at least for the time being. The Milwaukee Police Association said Monday that it has been advocating for two-officer squads for seven years and is now demanding they be made permanent. According to a release from MPA President Mike Crivello, "officers must know they are supported…not solely in words, but actions."
Meanwhile, the police officer injured Sunday while responding to a domestic call, is being treated for non-life threatening injuries, after a man approached the officer’s squad car on foot and fired several times into the car. A Milwaukee Police Officer was shot while investigating a call on Sunday, July 17th on Milwaukee’s South Side.
MPD Officers responded to several calls in the 3500 block of S. 17th Street in the early morning hours of July 17th. Officers were called to the area for two domestic violence related incidents and during both occasions, the suspect was no longer there when officers arrived.
Around 2:00 a.m., a MPD Officer was seated in a squad car in the area conducting the investigation when a suspect approached on foot and fired a gun several times into the squad, striking the officer several times.
As officers were on scene investigating regarding the injured officer they heard a single gun shot around 2:30 a.m., in the 3500 block of South 17th Street. They found a male who had suffered an apparent self-inflicted fatal gun shot wound to the head. A handgun was recovered next to the suspect.
The deceased suspect is a 20-year-old West Allis man with an arrest record which includes two prior felonies. He is the suspect of the domestic violence incidents for which the police were originally called. It is believed that this person is the suspect who shot the officer. Ballistic evidence will confirm this in the coming days and MPD is not seeking any other suspects.
The officer that was shot is a 31-year old male with 13 years experience. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life threatening but serious injuries.
