Thousands of people gathered on Wednesday to honor the life of Michael Michalski, a Milwaukee police officer who was killed in the line of duty on July 25.

A memorial service was held at the Assembly of God Church in Oak Creek. Dozens of law enforcement agencies escorted Michalski's body from the church, past the Milwaukee police headquarters and then to his final resting place at Wisconsin Memorial Park. American flags lined the entrance to the Brookfield park.

Michalski's partner, Stef Lynne, wrote a tribute to him on Facebook. She addressed her anger and sadness surrounding his death and how much she misses him:

"But more than anything else, Mike, I’m happy. And blessed. Blessed (and privileged) to be one of the people to call you partner. Happy that you ingrained in me to slow down and think of family first, happy for all of the great times we were able to have together that I can look back on, and blessed to have had the conversation with you where we witnessed our shared faith in God with one another."

The 52-year-old officer was shot and killed by a suspect as police tried to make an arrest in the Metcalfe Park neighborhood a week ago. He died at Froedtert Hospital. The suspect fled but was later apprehended.
