Youth Lead Milwaukee's Fight for Stricter Gun Laws at March For Our Lives Event

Milwaukee area youth and others pushing for tougher gun laws participated in a local March For Our Lives event on Saturday morning. The city was one of many participating in the demonstrations. Hundreds gathered in front of the Milwaukee County Courthouse for the rally, which included speeches from young people.

Elementary, high school and college students called attention to their fear that they could become victims of school shootings. One student said adults claim kids should be focused on their education instead of gun issues, but it's impossible when they're taking time out of the school day for drills that prepare them for active shooter scenarios.

After the speeches at the courthouse, the crowd marched to Red Arrow Park across the street from City Hall. Organizers led the crowd in chants saying things, such as "we want change" and "we call B.S." Some carried signs saying "fear has no place in our schools."

Event organizers pushed for people to register to vote for upcoming elections. They say voters can oust lawmakers won't act on gun reform. Representatives of The League of Women Voters were present to help.

The student leaders said the fight for change won't end once the marches are over. They say young people will continue to raise their voices. Katie Eder commented that while youth make up 25 percent of the population, they are 100 percent of the future.
