Heightened political emotions have racked Wisconsin during the past year. With the sour economy keeping tight its grip on state residents and businesses, voters put Republicans in control of the governor's office and Legislature, believing they had solutions. Some of those policies stunned Democrats and public workers, spurring unprecedented demonstrations and recall efforts. WUWM takes a broad look at what Wisconsin has experienced, why and where we might be headed.
Mining in Wisconsin
A mining company is interested in extracting iron ore from northern Wisconsin. Supporters say the operation would create at least a generation of jobs and new wealth for the communities. Some proponents want the approval process hastened, while opponents of less regulation fear the potential environmental damage. WUWM's Bob Bach reports.
Keeping an Eye on Chicago's Water System
Scientists have cast a keen and concerned eye on Chicago's water system that handles both the city's sewage and its ship traffic. The connecting rivers and canals allow passage from Lake Michigan to the Mississippi River, but can also allow invasive species to make their way between the two. There is special concern these days about the ravenous Asian carp perhaps hopping into the lake. WUWM Environmental Reporter Susan Bence toured the system.
