A first for Milwaukee - a house built of straw
By Susan Bence

WUWM’s Susan Bence visited Kane Commons, a “green" development not far from Brady Street.  That’s where “straw bale construction” is being used.  Myles Saigh heads the project.  He was in the middle of teaching people the nuances of the building technique, when he told Susan he became a believer in straw as he traveled around the country.

Saigh says work will continue on the straw bale house through the winter.  Right now, exterior walls are being finished with stucco and recycled cedar siding.

It took several years to get permission to build the home; that’s because the technique hasn’t been used in Milwaukee until now.

According to Saigh, the cost is comparable to building a custom home.
