A coalition of educators and parents is determined to change the way Wisconsin funds its public schools. One member of the new School Finance Network is David Ewald, superintendent of the South Milwaukee district. He says because of the current formula, his district has had to cut services and staffing by five million dollars over the last five years. This week, it will consider making another $800 thousand dollar cut. Ewald says, despite the tough economy, Wisconsin must find a way to devote more money to education.
“We think the issue has to be in the mix with all the other issues that are considered crises at this point", Ewald says.
The group’s plan would require the state to pay more toward the cost of educating students with special needs and those learning the English language, as well as cover more of the transportation bill. Ewald says the Network does not indicate from where the additional money should come.
