There’s been disagreement within Milwaukee County government as to how aggressively it should pursue federal stimulus money. County Executive Scott Walker says the county cannot afford to take money that would require a local contribution, or start programs that would need ongoing county funding. Today, the County Board overrode his decision on the issue; the vote was 16-2. Supervisor Theodore Lipscomb heads the county Task Force on Economic Stimulus.
“The veto override establishes that it is the official position of Milwaukee County to pursue all available economic stimulus funding that board determines is in our best interest and directs him to carry out the policy of the Milwaukee County Board, which, that is his job as an administrator to carry out our policy,” Lipscomb says.
Lipscomb says whenever the county accepts federal funding, it’s with the caveat that the county will contribute something; and he says in today’s economy, Milwaukee desperately needs assistance.
