Despite swine flu outbreaks across the country, immigration activists are carrying on with plans to stage large demonstrations on Friday. It will mark the fourth annual ‘Day with out Latinos’ march and rally, including in Milwaukee. WUWM’s LaToya Dennis has more.
The group spearheading the event in Milwaukee on Friday is Voces de la Frontera. In the past, it’s drawn tens of thousands of participants. Many have ties with family and friends in Mexico, the center of the swine flu outbreak. Executive Director Christine Neumann-Ortiz says, after conversations nationally and locally, her organization has decided to proceed as planned.
“We do feel that it is safe for people to participate,” Neumann- Ortiz says.
Health officials say the best preventative measures are for people to stay home if they’re ill, to wash hands frequently and avoid large crowds.
