The city of Janesville is sitting tight. General Motors says it will decide by the end of the month, where it will produce a new small car. Three plants are in the running, including the one GM vacated in Janesville. The other two are in Lake Orion, Michigan and Spring Hill, Tennessee.
Kristin Dziczek analyzes the auto industry for the Center for Automotive Research, in Michigan. She says GM would likely have to spend more to retool the Janesville plant than the other two. She says Janesville’s labor situation ranks in the middle of the three cities competing for GM’s new car production. Dziczek rates Wisconsin ahead of the others in its ability to provide incentives. According to Dziczek, GM will have to spend $700 million minimum to retool whichever plant it selects.
