Child welfare advocates are praising a bill that would require public disclosure within two days of whenever a child in the foster care system dies or is abused. A bipartisan group of lawmakers in the Senate and Assembly introduced the measure this week. They’re responding to the murder of 1-year-old Christopher Thomas while under the supervision of the Bureau of Milwaukee Child Welfare. Susan Conwell is executive director of the advocacy group, Kids Matter, Inc. She told WUWM’s Erin Toner that under the bill, the public would get the basic information about how kids are doing in foster care, and how safe they are.
