The state teachers union, WEAC, and the Milwaukee Teachers' Education Association announced a plan Wednesday for reforming the Milwaukee Public Schools system. They said the proposal is an alternative to Gov. Doyle and Mayor Barrett's proposed mayoral takeover of MPS. The teachers' plan is called the “Milwaukee Opportunity Plan." It would eliminate the position of school superintendent, and instead have the district be led by a chief academic officer and a business officer. The plan also makes other suggestions, including reducing class sizes for students from kindergarten through eighth grade.
