Supervisors Approve Tax Levy Increase, Defeat Wheel Tax Proposal

The Milwaukee County Board has passed its version of the 2010 county budget.

A proposed $20 wheel tax and parking meters along the lakefront failed to win approval. Funding was restored for the King and Kosciuszko Community Centers, and two indoor and four outdoor swimming pools that County Executive Scott Walker wanted closed.

Supervisors convened for over 17 hours before approving the spending blueprint about 2am today.

Bottom line: a 3.8 percent increase in the tax levy which means the owner of a $150,000 home will pay about $7.65 more on the county portion of the tax bill.

Rob Henken is President of the Public Policy Forum of Milwaukee. He is a former budget analyst for the Milwaukee County board and a member of County Executive Scott Walker's administration. We asked Henken if the length of the budget session surprised him.
