Milwaukee's Sixteenth Street Community Health Center will celebrate its 40th anniversary Thursday. Spokeswoman Ellyn McKenzie says the clinic was founded by residents who wanted greater access to health care in their south side neighborhood.

"Some medical providers had moved out of the neighborhood. There were some language issues with Hispanic residents not being able to get services in a language that they were comfortable in. That's something that really hasn't changed for us," McKenzie says.

The Sixteenth Street Community Health Center serves 30,000 people a year, at two clinics. Most patients are from low-income households and have no health insurance.
