There’s a growing number of abandoned houses in certain Milwaukee neighborhoods, according to a local activist group. And it’s calling on three big banks to do something about the problem. Southeastern Wisconsin Common Ground says residents of the Amani neighborhood on the north side, are frustrated that no one is tending to some houses in foreclosure, so they’re rotting. WUWM’s Marge Pitrof spoke with two members of Common Ground: Minister Paul Hull of Progressive Baptist Church and Mark Fraley.

U.S. Bancorp responded to our inquiries by saying it is a trustee of some foreclosed properties here and not the servicer, and therefore not responsible for maintaining them. The City Attorney's Office told us it has been pursuing some cases against banks, but that the issue is complicated and depends on the status of the foreclosure process. The office says in some cases, all parties have been walking away from rundown properties.
