New regulations that Wisconsin has imposed on Parental Choice schools, seem to have had an impact. Private schools in Milwaukee that have been accepting students with state vouchers must now be accredited. New schools entering the Choice program must be pre-accredited and then have three years to fully comply.
The Public Policy Forum has been monitoring trends. Research Director Anneliese Dickman says every year about 11 new schools have joined the voucher program, but this fall only three did.
“And the number of schools that closed, from year to year, was the most over the past 10 years as well. So we think that’s a pretty good indication that those requirements had an impact,” Dickman says.
Fourteen schools closed.
Dickman says in order to be accredited, schools must show an independent agency that their academic and business practices meet standards.
Next school year, the state will require Choice schools to submit students’ standardized test scores.
There are currently 112 schools participating in the voucher program.
