The Milwaukee Common Council Tuesday failed to act on a resolution calling for the city to boycott companies based in Arizona. Ald. James Witkowiak sponsored the resolution in the wake of Arizona’s new immigration law, allowing police to question anyone they believe is in the U.S. illegally. The council sent the measure back to committee. Alderman Robert Puente said his colleagues need to further study the Arizona law.
“In reading the Senate Bill 1070 I did read that they need to have probably cause or reasonable suspicion before stopping someone and questioning them, which is the guidelines for law enforcement, in order to detain or talk to somebody,” Puente says.
Advocates of Arizona law say it’s needed to protect people who legally reside in the state. Opponents say it promotes racial profiling.
