High school seniors will march through the streets of Milwaukee today, calling for more rights for undocumented students. The students want Congress to pass the DREAM Act. It would give undocumented students the chance to legalize their status by going to college or joining the military, and give them access to student loans. Melanie Benesh is a youth organizer with the immigrant rights group, Voces de la Frontera. She says right now, most undocumented students can’t afford college.
“If they want to study, they really have to pay tuition out of pocket. They’re not eligible to take out any loans for school, so often this means working several jobs while trying to go to school, or looking very hard for scholarships that they might qualify for, of which there are much fewer scholarships than they’re able to apply for,” Benesh says.
The march will begin at 11 a.m. at Riverside High School and end at UWM for a rally. The students are also calling for UWM to boycott businesses in Arizona because of the state’s new immigration law.
