Property values in southeastern Wisconsin declined in last year. But the gross property taxes levied rose 3.9 percent.
That's according to a new report by the Public Policy Forum. It says the figures are due to a significant increase in the combined tax rate of all municipalities, county governments and school districts in the region. It rose from 19.34 cents per $1,000 of property value to $20.36 cents per $1,000 of property value.
The increase occurred in each of the seven counties in southeastern Wisconsin.
Public Policy Forum President Rob Henken says the report has good news, of a sort. He says the average hypothetical property tax bill in the region actually dropped about $200 in 2010. Henken says that's because the growth in tax rates was eclipsed by the drop in value of the average home.
