MPS Enrollment Ticks Upward

Milwaukee Public Schools has grown by about 40 students over last year, following nearly a decade of declining enrollment.

According to the district, its student population has increased from 78,461 last year, to 78,502 this fall.

The schools it cites as having more students are Ronald Reagan College Preparatory High School, I.D.E.A.L. Charter  School and Golda Meir School.

For the past nine years, MPS has seen its enrollment decline by nearly 1,000 students per year.

In a release, Sup. Gregory Thornton says a growing number of families are interested in attending the district's high-performing schools and MPS is replicating those successes.

The district releases the enrollment figures, as some legislators pressure it to sell vacant or underused school buildings to other entities in the education business.
