About three dozen elk calves were born this spring in northern Wisconsin.Elk biologist Laine Stowell says none of the elk calves born this year in northern Wisconsin have been lost due to predation by bear or wolves. Stowell says for the first time since elk were re-introduced to the north woods 18 years ago, female calves outnumbered male calves. The herd now totals about 180 animals after an original re-introduction of 25 elk in 1989 near Clam Lake.
