Reaching for the Sky


Workers take advantage of fair weather to inspect Old North Water Tower on  east side o Milwaukee.City  engineer Anthony Fahres says it will be a day-long process,  Before workers were sent up in this basket, the system was checked.

Craftsmen erected the 175-feet Victorian Gothic masterpiece in 1873 to store water drawn from  Lake Michigan.  The Niagara limestone came from nearby Wauwatosa.  The tower served the city's public water system until the construction of a new pumping station in 1963.
