WUWM in the community
Here's where you can find what WUWM is up to out in the community.
Heal the Hood: Thanks to all who stopped by WUWM's interview booth
WUWM staff had a presence at the annual Heal the Hood block party on May 27, 2023.
At Heal the Hood, WUWM staff informed, engaged and built community. We informed community members about WUWM's work and the value that we provide to the community. We engaged community members through an interview booth, where people shared their experiences and memories at Heal the Hood. And, we built community through sharing information, resources and swag.
WUWM staff engaged with dozens of community members, and we recorded some of our conversations. Here is a short collection of the conversations that we recorded:
For 45th anniversary, WUWM connects with El Rey customers
The beloved, local grocery store chain El Rey will celebrate its 45th anniversary this Saturday, May 13. All four stores will participate in the celebrations.
I, WUWM's Community Engagement Coordinator, along with Reporter Lina Tran, visited El Rey on May 9, 2023. We asked community members about their connection to El Rey, why they shop there, what they intended to cook with their ingredients and how to pick the best produce (we got some insight on how to pick the best limes).
The Nuevo Mercado El Rey store on 916 S Cesar E Chavez Dr. features a bakery, restaurant, generous produce section, butchery, hot food to go and candy delights.
The outing to El Rey felt warm and loving. It felt like a community. Although El Rey stores highlight ingredients that are familiar to the Latino community, the store attracts the whole community.
We plan to air a story in the upcoming weeks about our outing to El Rey. The story is less about the anniversary and more of a love letter, a love letter to the community that frequents El Rey.
