A few weeks have passed since the U.S. Supreme Court upheld a key part of the Affordable Care Act. The court’s decision affirmed the legality of subsidies the government provides to make health insurance more affordable.
It’s the latest legal hurdle the five-year-old law has cleared, however, questions still remain about how the latest ruling will be felt in places like Wisconsin, and about what the future holds for the healthcare landscape.
"(The recent Supreme Court ruling) will definitely solidify the subsidies that about 90% of the 207,000 people who have health insurance on the exchange (in Wisconsin) receive, so that is a sigh of relief because many people depend on those subsidies," says attorney and president of the Wisconsin-based Center for Health Law Equity Barbara Zabawa.
Zabawa believes the court's ruling could cause some Wisconsinities to reconsider their feelings about the Affordable Care Act and what it means.
Zabawa says the political realm is the only "court" that has any hope of reversing the Affordable Care Act. "There is very heavy emphasis on the 2016 presidential race as the remaining outlets to replace and repeal the Affordable Care Act," she says.
