Ex Fabula: Beginner's Luck

Art Montes
Storyteller Meghan Koven

Being a novice can have some upsides – most notably, the phenomenon known as "beginner’s luck." Whether it actually exists or not, it has the ability to give amateurs everywhere a little boost of confidence. This week’s show focuses on how beginner’s luck may seem to be lacking at first, but in the end, delivers unexpected gifts.

Beginner’s luck can come to those who work hard and truly hustle. But as Meghan Koven learned when she was a Brownie Scout selling those famous cookies, sometimes you just get out-lucked. As she told the audience at the March 2018 “Karma” StorySlam, she was her troop’s top seller: competitive, gritty, pounding the pavement in different neighborhoods, workplaces, the mall and the grocery store. The night before the deadline, Meghan was ecstatic to be in the lead. However, a fellow Brownie’s dad made a last-minute buyout and she ended up coming in second. Meghan hasn’t forgotten the feeling of injustice, but her ability to hustle has come in handy ever since – in her role as Ex Fabula’s Board President, for example.

Storyteller Patricia McNamee Rosenberg

Our second teller, Patricia McNamee Rosenberg, was the audience favorite at last February’s “First Time” StorySlam, where she shared an almost unbelievable story about a first date. Before the date, she and a friend accidentally hopped in the wrong car in the mall parking lot – and also accidentally left her purse there. Patricia still went out for margaritas with this new gentleman, sans purse (containing phone, cash and identification). Fortunately, it was the mayor’s wife who owned the identical car, and the purse with all its contents – meticulously and embarrassingly catalogued by the police – were returned. But did her beau return for a second date? Listen to this week's stories to find out:

UPCOMING EVENTS: As luck would have it, the next (non-competitive) StorySlam will also have the theme “Beginner’s Luck.” It will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4 at Mr. J’s Lounge, 4610 W. Fond du Lac Ave in Milwaukee. Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door. Visitwww.exfabula.org/ticketsfor more information.
