Milwaukee Band Saebra & Carlyle Joins ‘Celebration!’ Event, Honoring Heroines In The Arts

Milwaukee band Saebra & Carlyle sees itself as an outlier in a music scene that is often dominated by men. But lead-singer Saebra Laken hopes to change that with more women-led shows like the group's upcoming "Celebration!" event at Club Garibaldi. The March 9 event honors heroines in the arts and donations will benefit Planned Parenthood.

The band — which is made up of two women and two men — features Laken on vocals, Carlyle Nowak on guitar, Jesse Buskov on drums, and Mary Joy Hickey on bass. Both Laken and Hickey say they have seen some progress in the number of women performing in Milwaukee bands, but they hope to extend that progress behind the scenes.

"I feel like there’s a lot of women that I’ve met, that I’ve networked with, that we play shows together — so that’s progress," Hickey says. "But I feel like the next level is getting more women behind the sound boards and booking the shows."

Joy is a WUWM host and producer for Lake Effect.
