Although Milwaukeean Kelly Dwyer went missing in 2013, it was just recently that Kris Zocco was convicted of reckless homicide in her death. While Zocco was a suspect for some time, it wasn't until well after Dwyer's remains were found two years later that he was charged.

The case made headlines locally and nationally as the trial played out. But writer Zach Brooke believes the sensational details often obscure another important, moving story lingering beneath the headlines.

"I’ve reported on true crime before, but I don’t think I’ve ever worked with a parent as closely as I have on this story. It’s a tough balancing act, because you need to be objective, but you also want to be sensitive to people who are hurting," he says.

Brooke shines some light on the rest of the lives that form the bigger picture of Kelly Dwyer's story, in a piece in February's Milwaukee Magazine
