Could Milwaukee’s Harbor District Be the Next Menomonee Valley?

Milwaukee’s Harbor District is only a short walk from the trendy Third Ward, but it might as well be in a different state. But momentum is building to reinvigorate the district.

A few months ago, the Environmental Protection Agency awarded the city $200,000 to push revitalization forward. And recently, a nonprofit, calledHarbor District, Inc.,officially formed to help coordinate the process.

Organizers say public input is critical to its creation. The group is collecting the input in a number of ways, including anew on-line survey.

WUWM Environmental Reporter Susan Bence met Harbor District, Inc.’s interim executive director Lilith Fowler at her office in UWM’s School of Freshwater Sciences, which is in the district.

Fowler believes the thousand acres that make up the district have a lot of potential.

Update: AECOM has been selected to create the Harbor District's Water and Land Use Plan. The project will be managed by AECOM's local office with support from their other offices.
