We've been talking to the Democratic gubernatorial hopefuls this week, as we head into the Aug. 14 primary. Today, we highlight Wisconsin Firefighters Union President Mahlon Mitchell. He ran for lieutenant governor in the recall election of 2012, and says if elected governor, he'll push for universal health care in Wisconsin.

WUWM's Marti Mikkelson spoke with Mitchell at a campaign stop in Milwaukee.

Why are you running for governor?

Mitchell:  I'm running for governor because we need a change in our state.

What are the top three issues facing Wisconsinites and how do you plan to address them?

Mitchell: 1.  Education — We have an education system that is lacking, and I have a plan that would require the state to pay 2/3 of the budget of each school district in Wisconsin.

2.  Health care — We need to make sure everyone has health care and that's why I've come out with "BadgerCare for all."

3.  Economy — I want to make sure everyone has a good job and a family-supporting job.

How do you differentiate yourself from the other candidates?

Mitchell:  I don't pander to certain audiences.

In what areas do you think you're vulnerable?

Mitchell:  None!  Just kidding. A lot of people would say that I don't have experience, but I think we have enough lifetime politicians in offfice.
