The leader of the Democratic National Committee says he's confident there will be a Democratic convention in Milwaukee this August. But details of the gathering are still lacking.
DNC Chair Tom Perez took part in a web news conference criticizing President Donald Trump. In his opening remarks, Perez said the convention would still "descend on Milwaukee." So naturally, when journalists got to ask questions, reporter Adam Brewster of CBS News followed up.
"How many people will be descending with you, and if you don't know the answer today, when do you expect to know the answer?" Brewster asked.
Perez replied: "We don't know the answer today because we don't know what the public health situation on the ground will be. Unlike Donald Trump, we are going to actually listen to the public health experts as we come to Milwaukee because we believe it's really important to have a safe, exciting, inspiring convention in Milwaukee, and I'm confident we can do that."
Perez referred to Trump saying he decided not to hold the Republican National Convention in North Carolina due to a dispute with the state's Democratic governor over social distancing guidelines aimed at reducing the spread of COVID-19.
Later Wednesday, the RNC's executive committee voted to keep official convention business in Charlotte and limit the number of delegates attending the convention. This is according to public radio station WFAEin Charlotte.
Perez says he's given flexibility to his convention planning team. He says he's still excited about Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and putting the spotlight on presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden.
"I think we're going to put on a great show for America. We're going to really highlight the vice president and his vision of which we rise together and unite together," Perez said.
As soon as the DNC knows how many delegates will attend the convention, Perez says he'll let Milwaukee know. The rescheduled convention is slated to begin Aug. 17.
