Ex Fabula: Doors Open

This weekend our city celebrates with Doors Open Milwaukee; so we thought we’d get in on the fun with some Milwaukee stories of our own. Doors Open Milwaukee is a “two-day public celebration of Milwaukee’s art, architecture, culture and history. This event offers behind-the-scenes tours of more than 150 buildings throughout Milwaukee’s downtown and neighborhoods and in-depth tours led by community leaders.”

Last year, Ex Fabula partnered with Historic Milwaukee for a Milwaukee-themed Storytelling event. Jeanette Arellano was one of the curated Storytellers of the evening. Growing up in Texas, Jeanette wasn’t too sure what she wanted to be when she grew up.  Then she met a recruiter from an art school in Milwaukee and received a partial scholarship. This was her chance to be something. Or was it? Once in Milwaukee she soon realized she was one of only a handful of brown faces in a sea of white students and excitement turned to anger. When she found a job in the school cafeteria, she found guidance in the most unexpected place.

When Weston Maier set his sights on the Medical College of Wisconsin over UW-Madison, he knew the competition would be stiff. He also knew that Milwaukee would be a completely different experience than Mad-Town. He wasn't prepared for who'd he facing off against, though: his beautiful classmate.  Nor could he have expected how that encounter would change - and even safe - his life. Tune in to this fateful “Only In Milwaukee” story from our April 2017 event:
