Ex Fabula: Karma

Art Montes
Storyteller Nakia Hood

This month we’re “lucky” enough to bring you not one, but two regular StorySlams - the first at Bay View’s Sugar Maple on Wednesday, March 7th. The theme is ever-intriguing topic, Karma.

We each have our own idea of what Karma is, beginning with Hindus and Buddhists who believe karma is “the sum of a person's actions in this and previous states of existence, viewed as deciding their fate in future existences.” Others think karma is destiny or fate and then there’s those who find that karma is a female dog. This week we’ve got two stories that will leave you asking, “Is that good karma?”

When Nakia Hood was a young boy he loved learning. Moreover, he loved the end of the school year when his aunt would line up all the kids, and hand out report cards, congratulating each one on their advancement. However, at the end of second grade there were no congratulations for Nakia.

Instead, he found that he’d be repeating the second grade with a new set of classmates and a new label, “LD” (learning disabled), which would follow him through to middle school. But did he really have a learning disability? And how did his past inform his present? Was it karma? You decide.

Storyteller Gordon Leech

Gordon Leech is one of the good guys - at least he tries to be. As a fraud attorney, he’s spends his days in court fighting for those who’ve been swindled and scammed. But like most of us, he makes a mistake from time to time. So when he missed a crucial filing date for a case, Gordon had two options: Blame his secretary (like most of his colleagues usually do) or risk it and tell the judge the truth and pray for mercy. How would his choice affect his karma? Tune in to find out:
