Ex Fabula: On The Road

Kat Schleischer
Storyteller Michael Heider

StorySlams, Workshops and the Film Fest, Oh My! Like the October weather, Ex Fabula Season 9 is coming in hot, with multiple storytelling events including a special curated StorySlam with the Journal Sentinel’s Wisconsin Trails. Ex Fabula Storytellers will join the Journal Sentinel’s Wisconsin Trails journalist, Chelsey Lewis and other community members to share personal stories about their favorite road trips and "On the Road" adventures.

This week we’re going “On the Road” as well with two tales of road trip adventures and self-realization.

Craving the open road and Western skies and fueled by the adventures of Sal Paradise and Dean Moriarty, 18-year-old Michael Heider wanted nothing more than to escape his childhood home in Milwaukee. When he learned of some friends were packing the car and heading to the Big Apple, Michael saw his chance to live his own “On the Road” escapade. In this “Theory & Practice” tale from April 2011, Michael recalls how what sounded good in theory didn’t exactly work out as well in practice.

Decades later, Peter Woods also found himself on the cusp of adulthood, craving an adventure. In this story from last December’s “Perfect Storm” Peter shared his coming-of-age adventure complete with an ensemble of “mad cat” characters and a Dean Moriarty all his own:
