A Filmmaker's Journey Down a Psycho Path

Among the many films playing during this year’s Milwaukee Film Festival, one film stands out for the sheer unlikeliness of its true subject matter.

Psychopath is not itself a horror film. But the man at the center of the story, the uncle of filmmaker Manny Marquez, is obsessed with movie special effects, especially horror movie special effects. So much so that he and his wife put their entire life savings behind the development of a drive-through horror theme park in rural Oklahoma.

Documentary writer and director Manny Marquez spoke with Lake Effect’s Bonnie North in the studio about why he wanted to tell his uncle’s story.

“Failure seemed to be the greatest option," Marquez says. "People that are against it locally, zoning laws, family that kind of refused to help…but he’s thinking, ‘this is my chance, this is my dream. I have this talent I’ve never put to use and this might be the chance that I actually get to blossom in it.'"

There is one more screening of the film during the Milwaukee Film Festival this Saturday.
