National political figures continued hitting the campaign trail on behalf of Wisconsin candidates Tuesday.
People filed into a union hall on Milwaukee’s west side to show their support for Democratic gubernatorial candidate Tony Evers and his running mate Mandela Barnes. But the big draw was former Vice President Joe Biden.
"Hello Folks. Good to see you all. It's good to be in laborer's house. The house that built the middle class," said former Vice President Joe Biden.
Biden stuck with the theme of labor throughout much of his speech. He blasted Gov. Scott Walker for the Republican governor’s measures that restricted unions in Wisconsin. Walker’s signature legislation, Act 10, eliminated most collective bargaining rights for most public workers.
Mahlon Mitchell also spoke at the rally. Mitchell is a former Democratic gubernatorial hopeful and is president of the Professional Fire Fighters of Wisconsin. During the battle over Act 10, Mitchell was among Walker’s loudest critics.
"In politics right now in the state of Wisconsin, we need all hands working as Democrats, as progressives, as liberals whatever you want to call yourselves. We need all hands working so we can get rid of Scott Walker," Mitchell said.
The rally was low-key compared to many others this fall. It had a somber tone, as Joe Biden bemoaned the nation’s current political climate. Biden called on Democrats to vote to change the nation’s course.
