Global Protest Movements Are About American Values, Says Art Cyr

Sometimes in a moment of social unrest, it’s hard to look past our own backyard. To keep things in a global perspective, Lake Effect has long called upon Carthage College Professor Art Cyr, author of After the Cold War.

“The basic commitment to human freedom, to basic equality under the law as we accept in U.S., Great Britain, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and most of Europe, has become increasingly widespread since the Cold War,” says Cyr.

With protests taking hold around the world, America isn’t unique in demanding reform. But Cyr believes that the practice of protest is still fundamentally American. Today’s dissenters, Cyr says, might look different in the future.

“American history, we tend to distill the truth eventually,” he says. “Well, we all have bias in how we view the world, and it’s important to be aware of that no matter who you are.”
