Gogebic Taconite Gets Exploratory Permit

The DNR has granted an exploratory permit to Gogebic Taconite, the company that wants to open a giant iron mine in northern Wisconsin.Gogebic Taconite will drill eight exploratory holes in the Penokee Hills near Mellen, Wisconsin. The company sought permission to drill about twice that number of holes, but withdrew the request when state environmental officials sought additional information from the company.

Following a strict time schedule as new state mining legislation outlines, the DNR approved the company's request for reduced exploratory drilling.

G-Tac is seeking state and federal permission to open a four mile long open pit mine, promising to create hundreds of jobs.

Opponents of the project insist it will likely ruin a pristine watershed.
