Jazz Bassist Dave Holland Comes to Milwaukee with Zakir Hussain and CrossCurrents

Dave Holland

Dave Holland stands shoulder to shoulder among other jazz giants like Miles Davis, Chick Corea, Stan Getz, and Hank Jones. In his five decade career, Holland has played and recorded with all of them, and many others.

He's consistently pushed his musical boundaries with his own composing and with his own ensembles as well - his quartet, quintet, and big band. In addition to the esteem in which his fellow musicians hold him, Holland has also received honorary doctorates from Birmingham Conservatoire (UK), Berklee College of Music, and the New England Conservatory and was made an Honorary Member of the Royal Academy of Music (UK). In 2017 he was named a Jazz Master by the National Endowment for the Arts.

On Saturday, April 28th, Holland comes to Milwaukee to perform at Cooley Auditorium at MATC. He'll be with renowned Indian tabla master Zakir Hussain and a multicultural group called CrossCurrents.

We had a chance to talk with Holland ahead of his visit here, and he says this fusion of western Jazz and Indian classical music isn't really that farfetched:

"There's a lot of cross-pollination that goes on between these styles," Holland explains. "You know, as the world gets smaller we find ourselves celebrating the similarities rather than thinking about the differences."
