Mary Burke Enters Race for Governor

Former state commerce secretary and Trek executive Mary Burke is seeking the Democratic nomination for governor.

She made the announcement in a three-minute YouTube video. In it, she introduces herself to the state, talking about her work record and her family’s history.

She says she helped create jobs as commerce secretary, and helped grow her family’s Wisconsin-based bicycle company into a global operation. Burke is the daughter of Trek’s founder.

Political observers have been keeping an eye on Burke, some believing she could run a strong campaign, in part, because of her personal wealth.

At least one other Democrat, state Sen. Kathleen Vinehout, says she may also enter the Democratic field and will make her decision in early 2014. Vinehout wished Burke well and said Wisconsin needs a woman governor.

Republican Gov. Scott Walker is up for reelection next year.
