'Mathew Hintz: Spirit of the Open Road' Exhibition Celebrates The Late Artist's Legacy

Milwaukee is awash in the sound of motorcycle engines this weekend. Riders from around the world have gathered here to celebrate Harley-Davidson’s 115th anniversary. It’s an event that the late artist Mathew Hintz would have loved.

Hintz graduated from the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design in the late 1990s, and in 1998 received a styling and graphic design internship with Harley-Davidson.

He eventually became a licensed Harley-Davidson artist - one of only a few worldwide. Hintz designed shirts, logos, graphics, medallions and other merchandise. He also painted the motorcycles themselves, working in oils on large canvases.

Sadly, Hintz died suddenly and unexpectedly last December. In honor of his life and work, MIAD and Hintz's friend and business partner, Adam Meuer, co-curated an exhibit of Hintz’s artwork.

Lake Effect's Bonnie North met Meuer at the Brooks Stevens gallery in the basement of MIAD’s main building in the 3rd Ward to learn more:
