'The Robots Are Coming!': How Increased Automation Is Changing Manufacturing

Penguin Random House

As the manufacturing sector has evolved and job numbers have fallen, the rise of automation has been a key part of the equation. However, technology is impacting more than just assembly-line jobs in the 21st century.

If your job was suddenly replaced or changed by a robot, would you be ready? That's the question journalist Andres Oppenheimer asks in his new book entitled The Robots are Coming!--The Future of Jobs in the Age of Automation.

Oppenheimer is a columnist for the Miami Herald and a host on CNN Español. He told WUWM's innovation reporter Chuck Quirmbach that robots have been making their way into the workforce for a long time, but that pace of the change is increasing.

"The new thing is that robots are becoming increasingly cheaper and increasingly smarter, and that's changing everything," Oppenheimer says.

Support is provided by Dr. Lawrence and Mrs. Hannah Goodman for Innovation reporting.
