Art is sprouting along Wisconsin Avenue. From John Baldessari’s penguin statue in Northwestern Mutual's garden, to Beverly Pepper’s steel curves at the western edge of the project, this third year of Sculpture Milwaukee has brought more whimsy, beauty, and thought-provoking work to the city.
The WUWM studios are directly above one of the largest installations. Commissioned by Sculpture Milwaukee, Chicago artist Carlos Rolón has taken the glass atrium of the Chase Building and enveloped it in translucent panels of bright flowers. It turns the space into something Rolón calls a jewelbox.
He and Marilu Knode, who is the director of exhibitions and programs of Sculpture Milwaukee, joined Lake Effect's Bonnie North in the studio to expand on the project.
"What you're seeing and what the public sees and what many people may not know is that what they're looking at is an actual painting," Rolón says.
He continues, "What you're seeing are not computer generated or stock images. What you're seeing is actually one of my paintings that I produced in the studio."
